5just like the original but better!Dec 20, 2012
By Ellie
So cool that the Spirograph I remember is back! We have tried for years to find this toy in stores and online...could only find old ones on ebay for a fortune. This has all the original wheels and rings plus really NICE PENS...not only that, the pieces have bigger holes so that they work with any pen or kids marker you have at home. The best part though is that they now include "spiro-putty" for holding the pieces down instead of having to poke holes in the paper....great idea! I love that the storage case has a built-in work surface too....our kids aren't allowed to use pens on our table because it will leave marks, the work surface protects the table and makes it easy to grab all the pieces from the storage tray. The kids and the adults in the house all love drawing with this...Totally recommend!

4Blast from the past!Jan 12, 2013

This was one of my very favorite toys as a child. It's funny that even now, I don't have the coordination to do the graphics any better.
I would definitely recommend this product to any adult or child who loves art. I would love to see more children playing with toys like this than electronic gadgets.
I really like that the modern spirograph takes most pens, unlike the original. I have tested it with fibrous point pens, gel pens, roller balls pens, etc. They all work.

2Bummer - Warped!Feb 14, 2013
By M. McLain
WARPED – I am so disappointed in the quality, or lack thereof in the plastic rings and gears. I still took it over to my sister™s house to have ‘Spirograph Night” and her daughter (22 yrs) loved it so much that she purchased one from Amazon two days later. She was hoping that mine was just a bad one and the one she would get would be better. Well, I texted her the other day to ask how her Spirograph was because she told me she had received in the mail. She texted and I quote “Worse than Yours!”. How disappointing. After that text, I went to write a review, and then looked back at others reviews I hadn™t seen before I made my purchase. I saw others have had this same problem. After this purchase, I found a smaller version (different brand name) at a bookstore. The quality of the other brand was so much better, I mean a lot better. However this other brand didn™t have as many gears, not as many wholes inside the discs (which means less design options) and the wholes are smaller so you can™t use ultra fine point sharpies with it, which is what I love about the Spirograph brand. So I give Spirograph a big thumbs up for variety of discs, bigger wholes in the discs, and that they give a little bit of putty. The putty works best on a heavy card stock. I use 110 lb. But I give Spirograph a big thumbs down for the lack of quality of the plastic. With so many people having this same “warped” problem, I think it™s time this product needs an upgrade, because people do want this product. It™s a lot of fun when it works and frustrating when the gears slip due to a warped disc messing up the cool design you had going.

2Warped rings & wheels...Jan 16, 2013
By Aunt Beast
Was really looking forward to the arrival of my Spirograph, opened it immediately when it arrived & was quickly frustrated in my artistic endeavors.

On the upside: the putty really is a great idea and it's very sticky; there are lots of wheels and shapes, so you can make tons of designs; the packaging is well-designed--the pieces fit snugly & securely in their slots; and it's just plain fun.

However, the two large rings are warped and slightly bowed as are several of the wheels, so if you anchor the ring with 4 pieces of putty per the instructions, the wheels slide under the rings completely ruining the design. I experimented with the putty and the only way to compensate for the warp/bowing was to put a piece between each hole on the ring and press it down so hard it's essentially cemented to the paper (For the large ring that requires 13 tiny pieces of putty, 9 more than the instructions say you'll need) That makes it work and it is just as fun as I remember, however using so much putty means that when you peel the ring off, it wrinkles and crumples the paper, again ruining the design. So, kind of a fail.

I honestly can't figure out why these pieces are warped, except maybe that the plastic is slightly flexible--I remember the original Spiro pieces being more rigid. However, the pieces fit so well in their slots it's hard to imagine how they could have been bent or compressed.

I will probably fiddle with this some more, but expect I'll be returning it and hoping that the replacement is free of defects--in which case I'll update this review and up the rating by a star.

4As cool as you remember it.Apr 11, 2013
By Chris Mortika
When I was a kid, we had Spirograph, but we were supposed to pin the rings to the paper with a cardbaord backboard. Apparently, kids ate the pins, which was bad.

According to a friend of mine, at one point Spirograph sets had magnets, which adhered the rings to the paper via a metalic backboard. Apparently, kids ate the magnets, which was bad.

So now, the set includes tacky "Spiro-putty" that sticks the rings to the paper. Kids might still be eating the Spiro-putty, but apparently it's non-toxic.

So, I'm a math teacher, and feel compelled to ask: If the ring has r number of teeth, and the rotating gear has g number of teeth, how many petals with the resulting design have?
